If you want to sing out, sing out.
by Peggy Browning
If you want to sing out, sing out … That’s one of my favorite Cat Stevens songs. It’s stuck in my head today. And I like that much better than some of the songs that could be stuck there. Peace Train is an annoying earwig; so is Electric Avenue.
But anyway…I’m thinking that we (you and me and everybody else) should just take the opportunity we have every day to sing out, be happy, and make the best of our experiences. Do what we want to do, be who we want to be.
Time is short…the days pass quickly, the years run past us. We miss chances to be happy, to dance, to laugh, to love.
Once I knew a woman who I thought of very highly. We attended the same church … a fundamental church … which I no longer attend.
We had a visiting evangelist who warned us repeatedly that the end was near…that the Lord was coming back…that judgment day was nigh. He had an extended engagement there. He preached for a couple of weeks and after he left, the pastor continued down the same path of belief. The Lord was coming…look busy.
I grew so depressed that I couldn’t make any plans or start any projects. I was young, hadn’t been raised in that faith, and I didn’t have a clue about what to believe. I stopped going to church on Sunday nights…I could barely drag myself out of bed, out of the house, out of my worry about not going to Heaven. Because, of course, I felt sure I wasn’t good enough to go to Heaven… no way, Jose, would St. Peter let me in!
That preacher and some of the people in our church preached it and believed it. My friend…the respected older woman…and I discussed it and I told her how I felt and about how depressed I was. She told me she had been waiting for the Lord to come back all her life. She said she hadn’t started many, many life goals because she expected Him to arrive long before she could accomplish them. She lived a life on hold, waiting for something that would not happen in her lifetime, if at all.
That was 1979.
Now, 35 years later, people are still making dire predictions about the End Times. Of course, not everyone is doing it, but there is enough of a proliferation of that belief that it puts a large population on hold; waiting for better days…waiting for the End.
So …. if you want to sing out, sing out. If you want to dance, move to the music. If you want to write, put the words on paper. If you want to love, grab hold and don’t let go.
Don’t waste your time waiting … If you want to sing out, do it now.
